ZoneAlarm Debuts Browser 'Force Field'

ZoneLabs effectively invented the personal firewall as a software category. The company has built and expanded on its flagship ZoneAlarm product over the years, but hasn't released anything completely new in ages. That changed Monday, with the release of ZoneAlarm ForceField to public beta.

Where the ZoneAlarm firewall protects the operating system, ZAFF defends the browsing experience with multiple layers of protection. And you can use ZAFF on any computer.

The heart of the system is a "bubble of security"—a virtualization system that isolates the browser from the computer. Any browser-based exploits fail because they can't touch your computer's actual files or Registry items. If you're tricked into launching a Trojan, it, too, is trapped in the bubble.

ZAFF displays a visible force-field "aura" around each browser window to show that it's active. (GreenBorder Pro offered a similar virtualization system, adding a green border to protected browser windows. But since its acquisition by Google, GreenBorder apps are no longer available for download or purchase.)

Of course, if every action in the browser were virtualized, you wouldn't be able to download and install any new programs. ZAFF distinguishes between unsolicited downloads and those requested by the user; the latter are allowed to install on the physical PC. However, ZAFF checks each download's MD5 signature against a database of over 200,000 known dangerous downloads and offers to abort the download if there's a match.
