Outsourcing is a management tool that is with us to stay. The use of outsourcing will essentially redesign the hierarchical enterprise environments that were the hallmark of the 20th century. Governance is key. Yes, there will be hiccups. Yes there will be job displacement. But we have been here before. The manufacturing age made the job of many workers obsolete (e.g. blacksmiths). Outsourcing in the information age will have similar impacts. Commodity programming skills, for example, can no longer command a premium in the marketplace. Even so, there are lots of other ways to add value, as Alsbridge indicates. The ability to develop and nurture relationships is clearly one of them.
